Why do we practice Asanas?

The first is that to practice any real meditation, one needs at least one asana in which one can be perfectly comfortable for a longer period of time. The more such postures one can master, the better the basis for developing the inner meditation techniques.

The second objective of asanas is to bring health and energy to body and mind by opening the nadis. When such exercises are regularly performed, the path of Hatha yoga is opened automatically, though one still has to follow it further.

The mere mastering of postures is no objective in itself, though mastering various postures certainly strengthens the power of will and concentration and the habit of not paying too much attention to the information input by the senses. Thus practicing asanas in Hatha Yoga directly opens the path to Pratyahara and Dharana.

Most all morning yoga sessions are various forms of Hatha Yoga, except where indicated on the schedule.

Mandakini Puri’s Hatha yoga series combines traditional asanas (often therapeutic), pranayama and often various subtle exercises from the Sukshma Vyāyām series.

Ganga Puri’s Hatha yoga series – “Hatha vinyāsa YogAnga abhyāsa” – brings precise alignment of the physical body, awareness of the breath as well as the Prana, clarity to the mind, balance of the three gunas as well as the male/female energies within, opening of the chakras and a heightened connection with the natural and supernatural universe around us.

Guest teachers also may fill in to teach the asana and pranayam classes for our general guests.

Any guest following the ashram daily routine may join for morning asana & evening pranayama, without joining a Yoga Teacher Training program. Guest may also drop-in for a week  or two, while we do recommend longer stays for longer benefit.
