Holi according to the Hindu lunar calendar, is held every year in the month of Phalguna (typically around February or March after Shivaratri). In 2026 YogAnga Retreat will celebrate Holi at Sri Santosh Puri Ashram on March 3rd.
‘Holi’ marks the onset of Spring, when colorful flowers begin to bloom, and thus is often referred to as the Festival of Colours. Celebrating Holi at Santosh Puri Ashram involves playfully throwing gulal — bright powders, water balloons — at each other. These colored powders have special meaning: Red dye symbolizes love; blue represents the Hindu god Krishna, and green stands for new beginnings.
Pro Tip: Applying coconut oil, almond oil on your skin and hair can help prevent colors from sticking. This makes it easier to wash them off later and reduces the risk of allergic reactions.
Come gather with us in this special time of year to celebrate Holi at Santosh Puri Ashram. Mingle among old friends and fellow devotees. Splash each other with colors, dance and play games.
This ritual is derived from the story of Holika, who attempted to kill Prahlada, the son of Hiranyakashipu, through the flames of a bonfire. Although Holika was endowed with a boon to remain immune to fire, she was burned to ashes, while Prahlada remained unharmed.
